‘Swords stop Sharks in men’s soccer
The Chaminade men’s soccer team scored one of its biggest wins of the season Saturday, defeating Hawaii Pacific 1-0 at Atherton Field and ending a seven-year drought against its cross-town Pacific West Conference rivals.
The ‘Swords, who hadn’t beaten the Sharks since 2007, ended a 19-game winless streak against HPU, having gone 0-17-2 in that span. The win also gave the Silverswords their fourth victory of the season, breaking the previous school record of three set in 2009. Chaminade is 4-10 overall and 3-7 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU slipped to 8-8-1 and 6-5.
Nicolas Ferro tacked on the game’s only goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 19th minute.

A long through ball to Jamie Sporcic in the eighth minute gave Hawaii Hilo (6-8-2, 4-5-1) an early lead.
The Seasiders (6-5-5, 6-1-4) responded with a perfectly placed corner by senior Chad Nahoolewa to Bauer inside the box. Bauer tied it with his goal in the 25th minute.
HPU women win 10th soccer match
The Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team won its 10th game of the season, edging Chaminade 2-1 at Atherton Field on Saturday.
The Silverswords scored in the 22nd minute on a goal from Twyla Hamasaki, her fifth of the year.
HPU countered in the 57th minute on a goal from Erika Ellis to tie it up. HPU then got the winning goal from Lexi Cameau in the 71st minute.
HPU improved to 10-4-2 and 7-3-1 in the PacWest. The ‘Swords fell to 3-9-1 and 3-6-1.

After Daniela Chacon blocked a shot by Kristine Pasek, Kahri Golden kicked the rebound past the keeper to give the Vulcans (6-4-6, 3-3-4 PacWest) the victory in the 86th minute.
The Seasiders (3-13-0, 2-9-0 PacWest) started strong with a goal by Ansley Warner in the ninth minute after McKenzie Evans stole the ball and placed a nice through ball into the box for the assist.
A corner kick found Hilo’s Alexandra Marin a minute later and she used her body to put it in the back of the net to make it 1-1.
Vulcans No. 1 at Rose Invitational
The host Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team captured the title with a 5 over par 916, three shots better than St. Edward’s in Saturday’s final round of the Dennis Rose Invitational at the par-72 Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
The Vulcans’ Dalen Yamauchi and St. Edward’s Dillon Van Essen were co-medalists, each carding 3-over 219s. Yamauchi defeated Van Essen in a playoff.
BYU-Hawaii finished ninth, led by Inoka Kahawaii, who was in a 10th-place tie overall, shooting a 14-over-par 230.
Chaminade shot 324, completing the tournament with a three-round total of 954 (plus 90) to finish 11th, just two shots behind Sonoma State.
JT Trevathan and Justin Taparra were Chaminade’s top finishers, both carding 23-over 239s to finish tied for 37th.
