Mid-Pacific scored in bunches in the Owls’ first win over Punahou this season.
Their second was dictated by pitching and defense.
The Owls backed up a succession of MPI left-handers in the field and held off the Buffanblu in a 3-0 win on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Alex Oley, Noah Sills and Chase Wago scattered seven hits, walked one and didn’t record a strikeout while combining on the shutout.
Sean Kinel gave MPI the lead with a two-run single in the top of the second and the Owls turned two double plays to stifle Punahou rallies while improving to 4-1 in the ILH.
"Coach just told us to go in and throw strikes and mix speeds and show different pitches to get them out front," said Oley, who threw the first 4 2/3 innings for MPI.
"A lot of it goes to our defense and our catcher Noah Shackles. He really studies their players and knows what to throw to them and then we just throw it."
Punahou (1-4) also got a strong performance out of sophomore left-hander Michael Viola, who struck out two, walked three and kept the Buffanblu within sight of the Owls in his first start.
"He did great," first-year Punahou coach Keenan Sue said. "What I like most about Michael is he just wants it so bad he just wills himself to throw strikes. He’s one of those kids, you want him on the mound."
Although MPI earned its second win over Punahou this season, the difference between the first meeting — a 10-0 MPI rout on opening night at Les Murakami Stadium on March 6 — and Saturday afternoon’s rematch in Waipahu was … well … night and day.
"It’s process and they’re learning how to win," Sue said of the Buffanblu. "We’re sticking to our process in practice and they’re starting to get it, so I’m pleased.
"They succumbed to the pressure in that first game — the lights, Murakami, Mid-Pac — but they’ve settled down and they looked like a different ballclub today than they did that first day for sure."
