No sign of oil on shore from spill off Barbers Point
An oil response vessel works off Ewa Beach to monitor and clean up a spill Wednesday.
Crews responding to an oil and water spill off Ewa Beach have found no sign that the spill reached shore or affected wildlife.
An overflight of the ocean off Ewa Beach showed a sheen of about two-square miles about five miles offshore, moving south.
Observers saw five pilot whales in the area, but there were no signs of distress in the animals.
A shoreline crew surveyed Ewa Beach Wednesday morning and reported no signs of oily debris. The crew will remain at the beach to help with decontamination of the oil spill response vessels.
Response crews at sea determined that the remaining oil in the thin sheens is not recoverable.
A final overflight was scheduled for late Wednesday morning.

About 1,200 gallons of oil and water spilled from a mooring about a mile and half off Barbers Point at about noon Sunday. The release happened during routine maintenance of the hose used to transfer crude oil and refined products between oil tankers and Hawaii Independent Energy’s refinery in Campbell Industrial Park in Kapolei.
