FACE summit will discuss housing issues
Faith Action for Community Equity’s Hawaii Housing Summit will spotlight various perspectives on the housing crisis.
Slated for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the state Capitol, the event will feature the views of state legislators, city officials, housing developers, investors, bankers, community leaders and construction and labor representatives.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell will give the opening address at 9 a.m. All members of FACE congregations as well as community and business partners are invited. Panel discussions led by FACE moderators are free and open to the public.
Here’s the panel schedule:
» 9:45 to 11 a.m.: Affordable rentals; transit-oriented development; and financing affordable-housing projects
» 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Incentives for developers and land use; state of the homeless; renewable energy and housing
» 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Housing the homeless; affordable homeownership; innovations; "What works, what can we do better?"

Canadian minister to speak at hongwanji
The Rev. Grant Masami Ikuta of the Buddhist Churches of Canada will be the guest speaker at the 2014 Dr. Albert Miyasato Memorial Dharma Session at Honolulu’s Jikoen Hongwanji Mission. Ikuta, resident minister at Steveston Buddhist Temple in British Columbia, will speak on "Embracing Change — the Quantum Mechanics of Buddhism."
Set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22, the session aims to deepen understanding of the teachings of Jodo Shin Buddhism. It will mark the 70th anniversary of Jikoen’s Buddhist Education Project in remembrance of Miyasato, one of the most influential leaders of the sangha and the Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.
Cost is $12 per person, including a bento lunch. Registration deadline is Nov. 15. Make checks payable to Jikoen Hongwanji Mission, and add a note with your name, address, phone number, email and preference for regular or vegetarian bento.
