The Hawaii Baptist girls, behind individual leader Shelby Suzuki, and the Pearl City boys, the defending four-time champion, lead after six games of the state bowling tournament in Kailua-Kona.
The final three games of the three-day Billy Tee’s/Hawaii High School Athletic Association event will be held Saturday.
Suzuki, a junior, leads with a pin total of 1,126.
Defending state and Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Chelsi Morishige of three-time defending state champion Pearl City is second with 1,059.
Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Anastasia Saili of Punahou is third (1,048).
HBA leads with a total of 4,807, with the Chargers second with 4,717. Sacred Hearts is third (4,439).
On the boys’ side, McKinley junior Bryce Takenaka leads with 1,141.
Damien’s Alika Vendiola (1,108) is second, followed by Kapolei’s Travis Takamiya (1,093), Pearl City’s Skyler Wakumoto (1,083) and Moanalua’s Jaren Apana (1,081).
OIA champion Ryan Kajihiro of Pearl City is sixth (1,079) and ILH champion Nicholas Lacaden of University is 20th (987).
Pearl City’s boys are in position for their fifth consecutive title after grabbing the lead with 5,111 total pins.
Kapolei (4,862) is second, followed by Aiea (4,776), Kauai (4,719) and Moanalua (4,699).
Takenaka, a junior, was 20th after the first session of games with scores of 150, 199 and 158 (507).
But in the second round of games, Takenaka tallied 173, 273, 188 for his 1,141 total.
Kajihiro, a junior, led after the first session with games of 187, 191 and 219 (597). But he then rolled games of 161, 148 and 173.
Vendiola, a senior, was the fifth after his first set of games of 170, 211, 183 (564). He closed with a 237.
Pearl City’s boys have four of the top 12 bowlers, with Imi Nakamura (11th, 1,045) and Kristopher Yadao (12th, 1,026) joining Wakumoto and Kajihiro.
Hawaii Baptist’s girls have two in the top seven, with Candace Minami (7th, 996) joining Suzuki.
Suzuki opened with a 213 game and led after the first three games with a total of 598. Morishige, who opened with a 145 game, is ninth at 501.
Suzuki had second-round games of 188, 149, 191, while Morishige had 169, 162, 227 to vault into second.
Saili closed with a 232 to move from fifth after the first round of games into third.
Girls who are members of a team bowled Thursday, while boys who are team members bowled Friday.
