Book, gathering celebrate lau hala
Celebrate the art of lau hala weaving at a book signing and demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Native Books/Na Mea Hawai‘i at Ward Warehouse.
"‘Ike Ulana Lau Hala: The Vitality and Vibrancy of Lau Hala Weaving Traditions in Hawai‘i" (University of Hawai‘i Press, $16.99) covers a diverse range of topics, from Hawaiian culture to the botany of the hala tree, to the mele and poetry of lau hala.
Contributors include a number of respected kupuna, teachers, artists and researchers such as Elizabeth Malu‘ihi Lee, Lia Keawe, Marsha MacDowell and Marques Marzan.
Also included in the book, co-published by University of Hawai‘i Press and the university’s Hawai‘inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, are historic images from Bishop Museum archives and an the oral account of a master hat weaver’s daughter in Niihau.
The book launch kicks off a series of events around the publication of the book, which includes an exhibition at Bishop Museum in March. Call 596-8885 for more information.
Innovation is focus of first Summit Fest
Ward Village will present its first annual Summit Fest from Friday through Oct. 26, celebrating the arts, cultures and ideas of Hawaii. The three-day event, which aims to highlight Hawaii as an innovation hub for the Asia-Pacific region, will feature a broad range of speakers, entrepreneurs, musicians and artists.
A kickoff party begins with a cocktail reception at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by guest speakers such as KITV news anchor Yunji de Nies and live music. Among the presenters throughout the event are Native Hawaiian artist Solomon Enos, educator Micah Hirokawa and archaeologist Terry Hunt.
Performers include Lucie and the Perfect Wave, Tavana, Quadraphonix and international poet Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo.
Preview Hawai‘i Fashion Month, meet "Project Runway" finalist Kini Zamora and network with Robert Lambeth, executive director of the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Halloween party benefits pa‘u group
Hawaii Pa‘u Riders is hosting a Spooktacular Halloween Bash on Saturday to raise money so the group can represent Hawaii in the 2015 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day.
The event takes place from 3 to 8 p.m. at Rumours in the Ala Moana Hotel and is restricted to ages 21 and older. For tickets, $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door, text Leiala Cook at 561-6580.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the scariest, most original and most comical costumes. Raffle prizes include an iPad, a 51-inch flat-screen TV, a one-night stay at the Hawaii Prince Hotel with a crab dinner for two, and a Tahitian pearl.
