Hawaiian Airlines is canceling 13 interisland flights of ‘Ohana by Hawaiian due to some passengers electing to take advantage of the company’s change-fee waiver and switching their reservations.

The state’s largest carrier, which contracts out the operation of ‘Ohana to Idaho-based Empire Airlines, said Friday that it was canceling four flights between Honolulu, Molokai and Lanai on Saturday and seven flights between those destinations on Sunday. There were two flights involving those same airports canceled Friday. The reaccommodation of passengers left some ‘Ohana passenger flights with low passenger loads.

Hawaiian said it also might consolidate some flights this weekend of its parent carrier.

Hawaiian spokeswoman Ann Botticelli said none of the flights were canceled specifically because of Hurricane Ana.

Island Air previously announced Wednesday it was canceling 50 flights involving Honolulu, Lanai, Maui and Kauai over a three-day period ending Monday afternoon. Island Air said the early cancellations were announced for the safety of its employees and passengers and to avoid people getting stranded. Island Air’s announcement came before Ana was upgraded to a hurricane from a tropical storm.
