ASB donates $400,000 to nonprofits
American Savings Bank donated more than $400,000 to Hawaii nonprofits through an employee-giving campaign and the Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation, the company announced Tuesday.
ASB’s giving campaign provides an opportunity for employees to donate to one of ASB’s Kahiau Community Partners. Each donation is matched by the bank up to $100,000. The 2015 campaign raised just under $225,000 to benefit 10 Hawaii nonprofits.
Kupu, a nonprofit that focuses on promoting youth service-learning and environmental stewardship, received $50,000. Other recipients include the University of Hawaii, Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship and Boy Scouts Aloha Council.
FedEx agrees to take over Dutch rival
THE HAGUE, Netherlands » FedEx has agreed to take over Dutch delivery company TNT Express for $4.8 billion, bolstering its global business with an acquisition that rival UPS had tried but failed to complete two years ago.
FedEx said Tuesday it reached a conditional agreement with TNT Express’ management on an all-cash offer of 8 euros ($8.75) per TNT share. That represents a premium of 33 percent over the shares’ April 2 closing price, the companies said.
Uber gains traction with business travelers
NEW YORK » Business travelers are bypassing the taxi queue with greater frequency, choosing instead ride-hailing services like Uber Technologies.
A new report by expense management system provider Certify shows that 47 percent of the ground transportation rides by its users in March were through Uber. That’s more than tripled from the 14 percent of rides that Uber had just over a year ago in January 2014. In a few cities, Uber now tops taxi rides for business travelers.
U.S. job openings rise to 14-year high
WASHINGTON » It turns out we may be able to breathe easier about the slowdown in hiring last month.
A new Labor Department report Tuesday showed that job openings surged 3.4 percent to 5.1 million in February — a 14-year high. That’s a clear sign that companies are willing to boost their staffs.

Dr. Kenric Murayama is joining the John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Surgery at the University of Hawaii and will be appointed as chairman when he arrives in midyear. Murayama, a native of Hawaii, obtained his medical degree from John A. Burns School of Medicine and trained at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he also did a two-year research fellowship in pancreatic physiology.
