Sand Volleyball
Donations boost program
The UH sand volleyball team had to postpone its Portuguese Horseshoe Tournament fundraiser until Sunday due to Hurricane Ana, but it didn’t delay a donation.
The Murayama family — father Jared, mother Donna and daughters Jaimie and Cara — have pledged $25,000 over each of the next four years for a total of $100,000.
The program already has $35,000 in matching funds pledged from two anonymous donors with the goal of raising at least another $35,000 with next week’s event. Last year, $50,000 was raised, $25,000 of it from matching funds.
The money is used to fund travel for the SandBows, who finished tied for third nationally last season, as well as bring teams to Hawaii for matches.
The fundraiser is scheduled from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at Hunakai Park in Kahala. For information, contact Danny Alvarez at 394-7650.

They’ll then host the three-day Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Kauai starting Monday. The 15-team field is led by 16th-ranked Georgia Tech.
The Rainbow Wahine play in the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club in Kohala starting Monday. UH placed seventh out of 14 teams in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational last week at Leilehua Golf Course.
