When Donnie King Jr.’s opportunity arrived, he promptly produced.
After seeing sporadic playing time in his previous four years, the former walk-on caught one pass in the Rainbow Warriors’ season opener against Washington then went six games without touching the ball.
"My dad told me to stay in it, the coaches just said ‘keep grinding, your opportunity will come,’ " King said.
When the 5-foot-7 senior was summoned late in the first quarter against Nevada, UH quarterback Ikaika Woolsey immediately looked his way.
King broke toward the sideline from his slot position and snagged Woolsey’s throw as a defender dove in front of him. That left King with a clear path to the end zone for the 38-yard touchdown, his second score.
King caught four passes for 59 yards, perhaps opening the way for more opportunities.
