Dorrien Hermosura-Villanueva came through on the mound and at the plate Friday night as No. 3 Campbell rallied past No. 2 Mililani 4-3 to clinch the OIA West regular-season title.
Hermosura-Villanueva tied the game with a two-run triple in the sixth inning and hurled two shutout innings in relief for the Sabers.
The teams both finished 10-2, but Campbell had the tiebreaker edge on Mililani. The teams split their two matchups during the season. The next tiebreaker was wins accumulated by teams that each squad had beaten.
Hermosura-Villanueva was clutch enough, striking out five in his two-inning stint after moving over to the mound from first base.
His big hit in the bottom of the sixth, a lofty, perfectly placed ball in a tough lefty-versus-lefty battle against Mililani starter Koa Eastlack, landed in the right-field corner. Blayze Arcano-Llacuna and courtesy runner Jake Mendoza scored on the play to tie the score at 3.
"I sat on his curveball," said Hermosura-Villanueva, who had struck out twice earlier. "I couldn’t pick up his curve, just thinking too much at the plate."
With the bases loaded, Tryzen Patricio’s fielder’s-choice grounder brought home courtesy runner Jake Mendoza to give Campbell the eventual winning run.
The Trojans tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Ty DeSa reached base on catcher’s interference with two outs, then went to second on a wild pitch.
Hermosura-Villanueva bore down and struck out Justice Nakagawa to end the game.
The tiebreaker situation, the loss — the Trojans took it all in stride. Despite the electric atmosphere before a crowd of about 200 at Hans L’Orange Park, it was, all in all, a regular-season game.
"If we would’ve just won the games we were supposed to, we wouldn’t be in this situation," Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. "It was two ballclubs competing. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first game or the last."
Eastlack went 51/3 innings, allowing all four runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked none in a solid outing.
"He left a couple of pitches up and their guys kept battling," Hirayama said. "We hit the ball well, probably the best we have all year, but we hit it right at their guys with runners in scoring position."
For Campbell, the win is a potential momentum-builder heading into the single-elimination playoffs.
"I’m glad our boys were able to fight back. Mililani put us in a hole and we’ve had trouble coming back in the games we’ve lost," Sabers coach Rory Pico said.
Kila Kapihe started on the mound for Campbell and went five innings. He gave up three runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked just one.
Hermosura-Villanueva was ready to go, but Kapihe did good work on the mound.
"Coach said I was early relief, but Kila threw pretty well," Hermosura-Villanueva said. "I’ve got better command of my fastball (this year), and I threw some change-ups and curves."
Campbell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Ian Kahaloa’s single to left, scoring Jobe Ibara.
Mililani tied it at 1 in the second when Nakagawa tripled to deep center and scored on a shallow sacrifice fly by Adam Connell.
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead, when Kainoa Wilson tripled to left center and came home on a two-out, opposite-field single by Sean Sonognini.
The Trojans added another run in the fifth, when DeSa singled to right, scoring Ryan Kono for a 3-1 lead. From there, they seemed to have the game under control until Campbell’s comeback in the bottom of the sixth.
