As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, Ana was about 545 miles southeast of Hilo, moving west at 10 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 60 mph. The storm is forecast to gradually intensify and may become a hurricane on Thursday. A gradual turn toward the northwest was expected Wednesday or early Thursday, and Ana was forecast to maintain that motion through Friday.

Meteorologist Chris Brenchley of the National Weather Service pointed to the predicted “cone of uncertainty” during a news conference about the storm on Wednesday at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s headquarters in Manoa. “It’s a dangerous enough situation that folks everywhere need to pay attention for latest updates,” he said. “The time to prepare is now.”
