Hit-and-run suspect released from custody
A 32-year-old Waipahu man suspected of hitting three people and fleeing the accident scene at Laniakea Beach, a well-known place to view Hawaiian green sea turtles, was released by police Monday afternoon pending further investigation.
The man was arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of three counts of accidental injury, driving under the influence and failing to stop and render aid.
Police said the suspect allegedly struck a 63-year-old woman, and then moments later a 35-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, near a Laniakea bus stop while driving toward Waialua on Kamehameha Highway.
He fled the area but was found 30 minutes later at Haleiwa Beach Park.
Lifeguards stationed nearby tended to the victims until paramedics arrived. Paramedics took the three to the hospital in serious condition.
Man allegedly steals car with child still in it
A 24-year-old homeless man faces kidnapping charges after stealing a vehicle while the owner’s young child was still in it.
Police said the incident occurred in the Pearl City area just after 11 a.m. Monday. The suspect allegedly took the car and drove a block before he realized the car owner’s 3-year-old son was still in the vehicle.
The suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot. However, a passer-by detained the suspect until police arrived.
Officers arrested the suspect on suspicion of kidnapping, second-degree theft and car theft.
