World War II-era fighter plane is found in marine monument
Marine archaeologists discovered the wreckage of a sunken World War II-era P-40K Warhawk fighter while doing research in Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
Parts of the plane were found in 25 feet of water off the southeast side of the barrier reef within the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial, according to NOAA.
At least 67 naval aircraft are recorded as being lost in the vicinity of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
The Navy built an air facility at Midway Atoll beginning in 1940, the organization said. The Battle of Midway, which took place June 4-7, 1942, was a turning point in the Pacific war against Japanese forces.
Haiku man ID’d as crash victim
Maui police have identified the 26-year-old man who died of his injuries after he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree Sunday in Haiku.
Zachery Callender of Haiku died Tuesday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The accident occurred at 4:20 p.m. Sunday on West Kuiaha Road, about seven-tenths of a mile north of Kaupakalua Road.
It marks Maui County’s 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
Callender was not wearing a seat belt, and may have been speeding when he lost control of his vehicle, police said.
Man indicted in race incident
A grand jury on Maui indicted a 22-year-old man who allegedly drove into a crowd of people just before the start of the Maui Marathon on Sept. 21.
Rustyn Pajimola-Aiu of Kahului was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangering and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. His bail was set at $50,000.
Police arrested him Tuesday on the grand jury indictment.
Maui police said Pajimola-Aiu, driving his 2014 Acura sedan, attempted to exit the parking lot of the Kaahumanu Shopping Center by way of Onehee and Wakea avenues early in the morning of Sept. 21 in an area where a large crowd had gathered for the start of the Maui Marathon.
Pajimola-Aiu drove into the crowd and stuck a 53-year-old man, police said. The man was dragged 30 feet and suffered minor injuries before people were able to stop the car.
Pajimola-Aiu was arrested and charged with drunken driving and for an outstanding bench warrant.
