An 81-year-old Wahiawa man was killed Sunday when he was struck by a car that hit another vehicle and a traffic sign before crashing into the Wahiawa Payless ShoeSource store, police said.

The medical examiner identified the 81-year-old victim as Jose C. Malapit. He died at Queen’s Medical Center at 4:30 p.m. — three hours after he was struck by the sedan while walking on a sidewalk. 

The cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries. The manner of death was classified as an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police said that at 1:20 p.m. a 2006 blue Nissan sedan driven by a 24-year-old Wahiawa man was traveling east on California Avenue when it veered off the roadway.

The vehicle struck a blue 2002 Toyota van driven by a 34-year-old Mililani man. Police said the van was leaving the Wahiawa Shopping Center & Wahiawa Town Center’s parking lot at the time it was struck.

Police said the sedan then spun sideways and struck a no-left turn traffic sign before it hit Malapit and crashed into a window of the shoe store, police said.

Responding firefighters found the 24-year-old male driver had  “suffered some sort of medical episode and lost control of his vehicle,” said Honolulu Fire Capt. David Jenkins.

The drivers of both vehicles were not injured.

Police said speed, alcohol or drugs are not factors in the crash at this time.

Malapit was Oahu’s 15th traffic-related fatality compared to 20 at the same time last year.
