Hard right leads to TKO for Holloway
Waianae’s Max Holloway improved to 7-3 in the UFC with a first-round TKO over Akira Corassani in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 22-year-old Holloway, who is the youngest UFC fighter with 10 bouts in the Octagon, got the stoppage at 3 minutes, 11 seconds of the first round.
"I’m in the gym day in and day out," Holloway said after the fight. "I’m not only working on my striking, I’m working on my ground and I’m working on my wrestling. I just didn’t get to show it tonight."
Holloway stunned Corassani early in the fight and landed an overhand right that led to the finish on the ground with the strikes.
Strong start for UH women’s tennis team
The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team won two of three doubles and seven of eight singles matches Saturday at the fall-season-opening UH Anuenue Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.
Rainbow Wahine players Cindy Nguyen, Paulina Petriskova, Sarah Gealer and Rebecca Faltusz were victorious in singles and doubles matches against Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade.
The tournament continues today at 1 p.m.
Cannen 2 over at Turtle Bay Amateur
Shaw Cannen posted a 2-over-par 74 to take the first-round lead of the 2014 Turtle Bay Amateur A-Flight played on the resort’s George Fazio Course.
Two shots behind are Rampal Singh, Charles Abanes and Darian Desellem. Sunday’s A-Flight final round begins at 7:30 a.m. on the Arnold Palmer Course.
The Turtle Bay Amateur is celebrating its 12th anniversary, and for the first time is being contested over two weekends. The A- and C-fights were played Saturday and Sunday, with the Championship- and B-flights on Oct. 11-12.
HPU men unbeaten in PacWest soccer
The Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team remained undefeated in PacWest Conference play Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Azusa Pacific (Calif.) at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
After a scoreless first half, HPU (5-3-1, 3-0) took the lead in the 50th minute when Brais Garcia’s header off a free kick from Erik Kemsies found the back post. It was Garcia’s seventh goal of the season. The Sharks were stout on defense, with goalkeeper Eduardo Palacios needing to make only three saves in 90 minutes.
» Jace Green headed in a center pass from Pawel Dregan in the second minute, and Green added another first-half goal as the BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team also remained unbeaten in the PacWest after a 5-0 rout of Dixie State (Utah) in Laie.
The Seasiders improved to 3-4 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest.
» A goal by Mike Reckmeyer late in the second half broke a 1-all tie and host Hawaii-Hilo held on for its first PacWest win of the season Saturday against Point Loma (Calif.).
Erik Lund gave the Vulcans (3-5-1, 1-3) an early lead with a goal in the third minute.
» BYU-Hawaii fell to PacWest Conference rival Dixie State 2-1 on Saturday in a women’s soccer match that finished in a torrential downpour in Laie.
Dixie State struck first in the seventh minute, but BYU-Hawaii’s Brittany Dyer answered just before the half to tie it. The teams sloshed through the second half even until the Red Storm scored in the 79th minute and held on for the win.
No. 4 Seasiders 6-0 in PacWest after sweep
Shih Ting (Stella) Chen capped a remarkable week by leading the No. 4 BYU-Hawaii women’s volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-9, 25-20 sweep over Notre Dame de Namur in a PacWest Conference match Saturday in Belmont, Calif.
Chen led all players with 17 kills to go along with 10 digs and three service aces. It was the fifth consecutive double-double for Chen. The Seasiders (9-3, 6-0 PacWest) held the Argonauts (0-13, 0-6 PacWest) to an .057 hitting percentage with six total blocks.
» The Hawaii-Hilo women’s volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller Saturday night, falling to Fresno Pacific 21-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 16-14 at Fresno.
Libero Hannah Butler set a rally-scoring school record with 43 digs to lead the Sunbirds.
Kyndra Trevino-Scott had 17 kills and three blocks, and Stacey Witt had 40 assists for the Vulcans (4-6, 3-4).
