As of Tuesday Eran Ganot still did not have a signed contract with the University of Hawaii nearly three weeks into the job, a spokesman said.
Neither the school nor Ganot, who was announced as the UH coach April 9, specified why the document remains to be executed. After a team workout on Tuesday, Ganot said he was not ready to comment on it.
A UH spokesman said there is a contract draft but neither party had signed it.
Speculation has been that Ganot, who agreed to a three-year deal, is now seeking an additional year due to the uncertainty of NCAA sanctions against the program.
Thursday is the announced deadline for UH to file its response to the NCAA’s January notice of allegations and, without an extension, sanctions could come as soon as July.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser requested a copy of Ganot’s contract under the state’s open records law but has been told that no completed agreement exists. The only document released by UH was a page and a half listing of boiler plate "performance incentives."
That document did not carry the signatures of Ganot or UH officials.
UH ran into controversy with former basketball coach Gib Arnold when it did not follow up his March 19, 2010, page-and-a-half major terms agreement with a detailed 18-page contract until November 2011.
By then Arnold had used his first season as leverage to gain a $54,000 raise.
The men’s basketball team holds its 2014-15 postseason awards banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on Wednesday. It is uncertain if Ganot will attend.
