Laniakea hit-and-run suspect released pending investigation

The 32-year-old Waipahu man suspected of hitting three people while driving drunk and fleeing the accident scene at Laniakea Beach, which is well known place to view Hawaiian green sea turtles, was released by police Monday afternoon pending further investigation.

The suspect was arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of three counts of accidental injury, driving under the influence and failing to stop and render aid.

Police said the suspect allegedly struck a 63-year-old woman, and then moments later a 35-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, near a Lani-akea bus stop while driving toward Waia-lua on Kame-ha-meha Highway.

He fled the area, but was found 30 minutes later at Haleiwa Beach Park.

Lifeguards stationed nearby tended to the victims until paramedics arrived. Paramedics took the three to the hospital in serious condition.
