BOULDER, Colo. » Behind aviator-style sunglasses, Hawaii quarterback Ikaika Woolsey could not mask his disappointment.
For the second consecutive week — this time in a 21-12 road loss to Colorado — Woolsey was pulled. He had completed nine of 20 passes for 56 yards in the first half before yielding to Jeremy Higgins following the intermission.
After Higgins departed in the fourth quarter because of a hand injury, Woolsey re-entered for a drive. He was 1-for-4 for 8 yards, finishing at 10-for-24 for 64 yards. Taylor Graham was quarterback for UH’s final possession, which ended with an interception.
Chow said Woolsey will remain at the No. 1 quarterback. Graham, it is assumed, would ascend to No. 2 if Higgins is unavailable for an extended period. After that? "We’ll see," UH coach Norm Chow said.
There are three other quarterbacks on the roster. Former USC quarterback Max Wittek is redshirting this season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. Beau Reilly, who completed a two-year church mission last year, and Eric Prater, who served with U.S. Army’s Special Forces, have not played this season.
Those decisions will be sorted out during the upcoming bye week. The Warriors will not practice again until Wednesday.
"It was just a little bit of everything," said Jordan Wynn, quarterbacks coach and play-caller, of UH’s offensive struggles at Colorado. "We didn’t do anything particularly very well. And we didn’t score a touchdown. There’s a lot of work to be done."
Woolsey said he felt "good" during Saturday’s warmups.
"Any time I’m on the field doing what I love, I feel good," Woolsey said. "The O-line did a good job giving me time to deliver the ball. Some of the balls I threw were off mark or just weren’t there for my receivers."
He said Boulder’s thin air was not a factor.
"That’s not an excuse for the ball sailing," Woolsey said. "I didn’t put the ball where I wanted to."
He said he will work on being "more consistent. That’s all. I didn’t play the way I wanted to. I need to dig deeper within myself and get better and focus on the little things."
Higgins suffered what has been initially diagnosed as a fracture in his left (throwing) hand. He said he suffered the injury while being sacked in the fourth quarter. He remained in the lineup and played two more downs before departing.
"I felt throwing made it worse," Higgins said.
Higgins completed his first two passes, then hit two of his next 15. He finished 4-for-17 for 66 yards.
"We have to be able to finish drives," Higgins said. "That comes with preparation. We were moving it up and down and then stall out. We need to finish drives, and trust the plays will get it done."
