Attempts to revive the man, a visitor from Kennewick, Wash., were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to firefighters. Police identified him as Alva Sanders.

Hikers rescued off Volcano trail
Hawaii County fire rescue personnel assisted a pair of lost hikers off a trail in the Volcano district Sunday.
The two hikers used a cellphone to call for help when they encountered unfamiliar terrain. Rescuers located the hikers using GPS coordinates from the call.
The hikers were airlifted from the trail, at the end of Ala Kapena Drive. No injuries were reported, but the hikers were interviewed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources for apparently entering the restricted area without authorization.
