Embezzler gets 90 days in jail
A former Molokai charter school clerk was sentenced to 90 days in prison and five years of probation Thursday for embezzling more than $12,000 from the school.
Sonja Domingo, 41, was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $12,478.65 and to complete 350 hours of community service.
Domingo was employed by Kualapuu Public Charter School between Aug. 28, 2012, and Jan. 14, 2013. During that time, Domingo falsified receipts and failed to deposit money she received from students and parents for meals, fundraisers and a book sale, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Domingo pleaded guilty July 8 to three counts of second-degree theft.
At Thursday’s sentencing, Domingo submitted an initial payment of $1,000 in restitution and completed an apology letter to the school.

EPA commands Hawaii County to fix sewage outfall pipeline
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Hawaii County to fix a sewage outfall pipeline east of the Hilo Bay breakwater.
The agency said the 4,500-foot-long pipeline from a wastewater treatment plant was leaking. The bedding for the pipeline was undercut, leaving it vulnerable to more damage.
"The work on the outfall pipe will help ensure protection of corals and other marine life in Hilo Bay," the agency said in a news statement Thursday.
"Coral reefs are sensitive to increased nutrients in the water that can come from waste-water outfalls."
The agency said the county is required to complete its repairs within 90 days of receiving the permits from the state Department of Health and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The county filed an application for a permit with the state Department of Health about two weeks ago, according to the state.
