Tryzen Patricio’s opposite-field double in the bottom of the sixth inning brought home the tying and go-ahead runs as Campbell rallied past Mililani 4-3 on Saturday night to capture the OIA Red baseball championship.
Ian Kahaloa went the distance and threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks. The 6-foot-2 senior brought major velocity and struck out the side in the top of the seventh as the Sabers (13-2) claimed their third league crown in a row. He’s been clocked at 98 mph in the past.
"The last inning, it felt like more than that," Kahaloa said.
"It feels great to three-peat," said Patricio, who also provided experience behind the plate as Campbell swept through three playoff wins.
The two West Division rivals split matchups during the regular season.
"That was probably my toughest game since sophomore year. Mililani is always tough to beat," Kahaloa said.
"It always feels good to achieve a goal," Sabers coach Rory Pico said. "We played just well enough to beat Mililani. We were able to get one last clutch hit."
Mililani’s Keolu Ramos was sparking in relief after taking over for Ross Kloetzel in the second inning and the Trojans down 2-0. He threw a string of scoreless innings until the bottom of the sixth.
Mililani led 3-2 when the Sabers clutched up. With Kila Kapihe at third and Keola Himan at second — moments after a bizarre fielder’s choice at second base that umpires ruled out, then safe, and then out again — Patricio faced a two-out 1-2 count with Ramos consistently pounding the outside half of the plate. Patricio had singled to left earlier in the game and didn’t look like he had much of a chance to get a clean cut against Ramos.
"He threw a strike on the outside part of the plate on the second strike, so I had a feeling he would try it again," Patricio said. "I was looking fastball all the way. I just wanted to get it in play."
He sent a fly ball down the right-field line.
"I honestly thought it would tail more toward the foul line," Patricio said.
The ball landed in fair ground, and Kapihe and Himan scored easily to give Campbell a 4-3 lead. Patricio was thrown out attempting to reach third base, but the damage was done.
"You’ve just got to tip your hat to them," Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. "They played seven innings and we didn’t finish again."
Two errors by the Sabers helped the Trojans score three unearned runs in the third inning off Kahaloa to take the lead. Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi’s two-run triple to right center was the big play, and Sean Sonognini followed with a single to center, scoring Souza-Paaluhi for a 3-2 Mililani lead.
