Florence falls in Hurley Pro final; Ho 3rd
After a stellar performance in Round 4, Hawaii’s John John Florence came up short Thursday against South Africa’s Jordy Smith in the final of the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif.
Smith opened with a 9.33 score on his first wave in the final, putting pressure on Florence in the 3- to 5-foot surf. Smith finished with a two-wave total of 16.50 to Florence’s 15.87.
In the semifinals, Florence took out Kelly Slater and jumped to No. 8 in the World Championship Tour rankings.
Hawaii’s Coco Ho settled for an equal third-place finish Thursday in the Swatch Women’s Pro at Trestles. Ho was beaten by eventual winner Stephanie Gilmore 13.84-13.03.
Five-time world champion Gilmore scored a perfect 10 in the final against Sally Fitzgibbons.
BYUH women sweep Chaminade
Stella Chen had 15 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii (4-3, 1-0 PacWest Conference) to a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Chaminade (7-4, 0-1) in a women’s volleyball match at Cannon Activities Center on Thursday.
