HPU runners dominate at invitational
The Hawaii Pacific men’s and women’s cross-country teams defended their home turf Saturday, taking the team titles at the Hawaii Pacific Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course.
Sharks runners finished 1-2-3 in the women’s 6K race, and took the top four spots in men’s 10K race.
Fiona McKenna led the way for the HPU women with a course-record time of 21 minutes, 18 seconds. The Ireland native beat the next closest runner by a staggering 1:55.
On the men’s side, Fermin Murillo-Villagran broke the tape in 34:24, followed by Leandro Santillan, Jorge Mendez and Cody Bartlett.
BYU-Hawaii’s men’s and women’s teams both finished second. Kevin Miller finished in fifth for the Seasiders in 35:04.75, while Haley Olcott paced the BYUH women women with a time of 23:33.66.
For Chaminade, Joshua Cordwin led the Silverswords men, coming in at 41:31.55, and Ellissa Bio crossed the finish in 31:23.85 for the women.
Seasiders 12-0 in PacWest volleyball
An efficient offensive attack enabled the BYU-Hawaii women’s volleyball to sweep Holy Names 25-17, 25-13, 25-18 on Friday night in a PacWest match in Laie.
Shih Ting (Stella) Chen recorded 17 kills for BYU-Hawaii (15-3, 12-0). Erh Fang (Ariel) Hsu added 10 kills and finished with a .692 hitting percentage, while Elizabeth Blake Solaita recorded 46 assists.
» The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team remained tied for fifth in the PacWest after defeating Dominican in four sets Saturday, 18-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-15.
Pomai Recca had 16 kills, and Tenika Wentworth had 26 assists and nine digs for the Sharks (11-8, 9-4).
» Fresno Pacific defeated Chaminade 25-17, 20-25, 25-19, 25-15 in a PacWest women’s volleyball match at McCabe Gym on Friday. Cassie Rushlow had 12 kills and Suncica Bakic 11 for Chaminade (11-12, 4-9).
Green’s goal critical in PacWest match
Senior midfielder Jace Green scored his eighth goal of the season to help BYU-Hawaii to a 1-1 tie with Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday in a PacWest game in San Francisco.
The Argonauts capitalized on a foul by the Seasiders in the 11th minute. The resulting free kick was headed in by Robert Hines to make it 1-0. The Seasiders responded midway through the first half with a header of their own. A cross to the back post by Abraham Garcia was redirected into the net by Green to even the match.
With the tie, the Seasiders (6-5-3, 6-1-2 PacWest) retained their hold on third place in the conference, one point ahead of Notre Dame (8-5-2, 6-2-1).
» The Chaminade men’s soccer team ended its final road game with a 5-0 loss to Academy of Art in a PacWest game Saturday at the City College of San Francisco Field.
Chaminade (3-10, 2-7) attempted 11 shots and Swords keeper Rene Mejia made five saves, but after a scoreless first half, the Urban Knights took control in final 45 minutes.
Third soccer win a charm for CU women
Junior Kristen Fujinaga scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute — her first goal of the season — as the Chaminade women’s soccer team snapped a six-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Academy of Art in a PacWest game in San Francisco on Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Ishii made three saves to earn the win and notch her fourth shutout of the season for the Silverswords (3-8-1 and 3-5-1).
» BYU-Hawaii women’s soccer team was unable to overcome a strong first half by Notre Dame de Namur in a 3-1 loss on Saturday in San Francisco.
Down 2-0 in the second half, the Seasiders (3-11-0, 2-6-0) cut the lead when McKenzie Evans sent a ball behind the defense to Emily Barfus, who finished with a shot past the near post in the 62nd minute. But Notre Dame added an insurance goal in the 80th minute.
