Seasiders stand pat in Division II poll
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team, owners of an 11-3 record and an eight-match win streak, remained at No. 4 in the latest AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll released Monday.
No. 1 Tampa received 44 first-place votes, while Minnesota-Duluth (4 first-place votes) and Concordia-St. Paul are ranked Nos. 2 and 3.
Mataele earns weekly honor
BYU-Hawaii freshman defensive specialist Ashley Mataele anchored a BYUH unit that held opponents to a .129 hitting percentage, helping the Seasiders win their eighth match in a row. She recorded 52 digs, averaging 7.43 digs per set. Mataele had 28 digs against Academy of Art and 24 against Hawaii Hilo.
MEN’S GOLF
Seasiders in third at Sonoma event
Nicolas Herrera shot par through the first two rounds of the Sonoma State Invitational on Monday to put the BYU-Hawaii men’s golf squad in third in the field of 14 teams.
The Seasiders ended the first day with a 20-over-par 596 and trailed Sonoma State by six strokes and CSU-Monterey Bay by eight. The final round is Tuesday.
Herrera shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and finished the first 18 holes with seven birdies to lead all players; he was also tied for the overall lead with Dylan Neal of William Jessup University. Herrera shot 3 over to finish second after two rounds.
BYUH’s Inoka Kahawaii and Frederico Clausen both are tied for 19th with a 6-over 150. Alex Stulce finished the day with 24 pars and is tied for 30th overall at 8 over.
BASKETBALL
Clinic scheduled for Oct. 23 and 25
Chaminade will host the Adidas Coaches Hoops Clinic this month.
The first clinic will be held at Baldwin High School in Wailuku on Oct. 23. Check-in is at 5 p.m., with the clinic to follow from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Oahu clinic will be at McCabe Gym on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. following a 9:30 a.m check in.
Jim Harrick and Dave Odom highlight the clinic’s coaching field. Harrick has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience and was a head coach at four different schools — Pepperdine, UCLA, Rhode Island and Georgia. In 1995, he guided UCLA to the national championship, the Bruins’ first since 1975.
Odom, formerly the head coach at Wake Forest and South Carolina, is currently the tournament chairman of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Chaminade men’s head coach Eric Bovaird and women’s skipper Bobby Keanini will also serve as clinicians.
