A monument to internment and shame
The creation of a national monument preserving the Honouliuli internment camp site is an immense gift to Hawaii and everyone who visits. It serves to remind us, in a far more vivid way than photos and text, of what the 400 or so internees endured. It’s ironic, too, that many of the internees felt great shame about their incarceration, those who attended this week’s dedication were told. It is not the internees who should feel ashamed.
War will drive people to actions they undoubtedly would rather forget — in this case, the injustice of confining people there who had done nothing wrong. But remembering it may diminish the chances of it happening again.
Wahine basketball a winner at the box office
It’s a simple sports formula. Want to sell tickets? Win games! That’s what the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team is doing, to the fans’ delight. The Wahine finished 23-9 this season, and increased ticket revenue 58 percent, to nearly $60,000.
That doesn’t come close to covering the costs of the team, of course, but it is the team’s best economic showing in years. The future looks bright for Coach Laura Beeman and her players.
