Schedule shuffle settles down
With the Rainbow Warriors finalizing their entry in the Gulf Coast Showcase, a previously scheduled game with Hawaii Pacific has been moved to Nov. 6 as an exhibition contest.
UH and HPU were originally set to meet on Nov. 26, but the game was moved due to the ‘Bows inclusion in the Gulf Coast Showcase, which runs Nov. 24-26 in Estero, Fla.
UH will face San Francisco in the opening round on Nov. 24 and plays either Florida Gulf Coast or Marist the following day.
UH’s game against UH-Hilo on Nov. 19 at the Stan Sheriff Center is now also part of the showcase as one of five "opening games" played at home sites.
CROSS COUNTRY
Wahine return to run at BYUH
Following its first road trip of the season, the UH cross country team continues its early-season schedule with a drive to the North Shore to compete in the BYU-Hawaii Invitational on Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine finished 23rd at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 13. Freshman Montana Martinez was the team’s top finisher for the second straight race. SOFTBALL
Ex-UH player wins baseball silver
Former UH softball player Tara Harbert helped the U.S. earn a silver medal in the sixth World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s Baseball World Cup in Miyazaki, Japan earlier this month.
Harbert started in center field and hit lead off for the U.S. She batted .176 with five stolen bases and drove in the winning run in an 8-7 win over Canada in pool play.
The U.S. went 4-2 in the tournament with both losses coming against host Japan, including a 3-0 decision in the gold medal game.
Harbert played three years at UH and earned first-team All-WAC and NFCA All-West Region honors in 2005 when she hit .423. She finished her college career at Colorado State.

Coming from the Waianae coast, Sonest Furtado’s college plans would almost certainly take her east. Fortunately for Hawaii soccer coach Michele Nagamine, Furtado’s route didn’t extend past Manoa.
"She probably could have gone Ivy League," Nagamine said, "and I’m just glad she wanted to stay home."
Furtado, valedictorian of her graduating class at Waianae, put together a breakout performance in the front half of her first road trip with the Rainbow Wahine, scoring three goals and assisting on another in UH’s last two matches.
The 5-foot-5 freshman scored her first career goal in UH’s 4-3 overtime win over Weber State last Friday and found the net twice in the first half against Idaho State in a 5-4 loss on Sunday.
"Sonest is doing exactly what Sonest does best, finish," Nagamine said. "It’s taken a little while to adjust to the speed of play but these last two games she’s come up huge."
The Wahine face Eastern Washington on Friday and Montana on Sunday in the Montana Invitational.
