Maui firefighters have recovered a man’s body found inside a car submerged in waters below a scenic lookout along Honoapiilani Highway.

According to the Maui Fire Department, the sedan was discovered around 8:45 a.m. Saturday by three skin divers who were sport-fishing in the area south of Lahaina.

Arriving fire rescue personnel found the vehicle about 40 feet below the top of the cliff. It was submerged in about 10 feet of water and about 30 feet off the shoreline.

The body was removed from the vehicle and airlifted to a landing zone at the lookout.
