No Pacific-wide tsunami was generated from a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Papua New Guinea on Sunday, U.S. scientists said.
The quake occurred at 1:48 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific-wide seismic sea waves would be generated from the temblor, but that waves of 3 to 10 feet above tide level could be expected along some New Guinea coastlines.
Tsunami waves of less than a foot were forecast for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and parts of the western Pacific.
The epicenter was 25 miles deep and 34 miles southeast of Kokopo in the New Britain region.
The quake was followed by a magnitude-5.7 aftershock.
