Nuuanu Congregational Church will celebrate Earth Day next week with free community classes on vermicomposting and a "Green Day II in Nuuanu" fair.
Ralph Rhoads will talk about vermicomposting, which involves raising worms to eat garbage, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday on the church lanai; and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 18 in the church’s Kosasa Hall, 2651 Pali Highway.
The Green Day fair, which is slated for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18, includes the following events:
» A "Free Cycling" section with free gently used clothing, linens, towels, bags, shoes and appliances.
» Free shredding of e-waste and pickup by Shred-it. Materials accepted: desktop and laptop computers, CPUs, CRT and LCD monitors, printers, fax machines, keyboards, mice, scanners, servers, routers, telecom equipment, DVD players, VCRs, MP3 players, speakers, telephones, cellphones, stereo equipment, digital and video cameras, calculators, electronic boards and cables.
» Handmade items (yarn jewelry, scarves, scrubbers etc.), plants, hydroponic gardening kits and fresh lettuce for sale. Affordable vermicomposting items will be sold, including worms, worm condos, worm tea and worm castings. Rhoads, aka "da Worm Guy," will show how to make worm tea and how a worm condo works.
» Boy Scout Troop 201 will help with eco-friendly waterless car washes from $10.
»A shipping container/ home model will be on exhibit by FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity). The container was converted into a two-bedroom unit that can sleep five.
The events are organized by the church’s Ulu Wai Ministry, which "cares for the needy, for the different generations and for the community while promoting sustainable ideas and conserving our resources in our Island home," according to a news release.
