Insurance company declares $2M dividend
Hawaii Employers’ Mutual Insurance Co. has declared a $2.25 million dividend for 2014 that is payable to qualifying policyholders. It is the eighth consecutive year that HEMIC will pay a multimillion-dollar dividend to policyholders with good safety records.
More than 75 percent of its policyholders, or 4,500 individuals, should receive a dividend in 2014, the company said. The dividend will equal 8.5 percent of the policyholder’s annual premium and will be issued as a check.
HEMIC is a Hawaii-based mutual insurance company specializing in workers’ compensation insurance.
Fewer isle households receive public aid
Hawaii is among five states that saw declines in the number and percentage of households receiving public assistance between 2011 and 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
A report released by the bureau Monday is based on data collected during the 2012 American Community Survey on household receipt of public assistance, including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families and General Assistance.
In addition to Hawaii, the number of welfare households also decreased in Arizona, Indiana, Virginia and Washington.
Conversely, seven states — Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon and South Dakota — saw increases during the period.
In the years from 2000 to 2012, 26 states experienced increases in both the number and percentage of households receiving public assistance.
Hawaiian Air and partners donate $100K
Hawaiian Airlines’ launch of its World Elite MasterCard earlier this year has generated an additional $100,000 in funding for the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
The donation came from the airline and its credit card partners MasterCard, Barclaycard US and Bank of Hawaii. The companies made contributions for each credit card activated between the card’s launch on Feb. 24 and May 13.
The funds are available on an unrestricted basis to further the voyage’s mission of global sustainability. The donation augments Hawaiian’s previously announced commitment of 32 million air miles for crew travel as well as cargo support to transport supplies.
