Campbell rode the right arm of Ian Kahaloa only so far Saturday in drizzly, muddy Mililani.

The top-ranked Sabers were two outs away from a shutout before the No. 3 Trojans staged an incredible comeback capped by Sean Sonognini’s RBI single for a 2-1 victory in eight innings.

Fans with umbrellas dotted the large, open landscape surrounding Mililani’s field, and scouts with radar guns packed the press box to watch the matchup of undefeated OIA West teams.

The scouts, as usual, were there to see Kahaloa, and he was masterful through seven innings, striking out 14 Mililani batters with all kinds of brilliant pitches.

Kahaloa scattered five hits but made one costly mistake. With a 1-0 lead in the seventh, a curveball grazed the jersey of Justice Nakagawa, who took first and made it to third on Kainoa Wilson’s sacrifice and Koa Eastlack’s single to center. During Blaine DeMello’s at-bat, Sabers backup catcher Blayze Arcano-Llacuna threw a pickoff attempt into left field, allowing Nakagawa to score the tying run.

Campbell starting catcher Tryzen Patricio, who played most of the game with an injured arm, was taken out after the bottom of the seventh.

"He didn’t tell anyone he was hurt," Kahaloa said about Patricio. "I didn’t know. It sounds like it’s been bothering him for days. He was lobbing it back to me on the mound by the fifth inning and he told me a few times to come closer to him after pitches so he could get it to me easier. Now I know why."

Kahaloa fanned CJ Ibara and Adam Connell to end the inning, but the damage was done.

"It was a tough game and we expected it from a great team like Mililani," said Campbell coach Rory Pico. "Mililani came up in the clutch and we didn’t. They made plays at the end and we didn’t. We didn’t move our runners along when we had a chance. It’s always the little things like that when two good teams play against each other. The good thing is it’s all things we can work on."

For the bottom of the eighth, Pico pulled Kahaloa, apparently to not overwork his ace, and the Trojans’ Ryan Kono led off with a sharp single to left off Zachary Kapihe, who is the Sabers’ No. 2 starter. Kono moved to third on two wild pitches and Sonognini flared a single to right to bring him home for the win.

"I was looking for something to drive," said Sonognini, a senior catcher and captain. "It was an 0-2 pitch and I took a fastball to the opposite field.

"We practiced (for Kahaloa, who can hit in the low to mid 90s and has been clocked at 98 mph). In batting practice yesterday, coaches were throwing pills at us, throwing really hard. Honestly, it’s a big win and it shows us where we’re at."

Mililani’s Keolu Ramos, the team’s last of three hurlers, pitched two innings for the win and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.

The Sabers (6-1) manufactured their only run in the fourth off Trojans starter Micah Chinen. Patricio’s squeeze bunt scored courtesy runner Kainoa Ganancial, who was in for Kahaloa after a single and advanced two bases on Arcano-Llacuna’s sacrifice and Keola Himan’s infield hit.

"It was two quality clubs playing the way you would want them to," said Mililani coach Mark Hirayama, whose Trojans improved to 7-0. "Ian’s a quality pitcher. You don’t see that every day. You just have to battle. We were lucky to get it into extra innings. A couple of balls fell in and we were able to string things together."
