HILO >> The largest supermarket in the Big Island town of Pahoa is reopening three months after shutting down due to approaching lava.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Malama Market is reopening on Wednesday.

The store, a gas station and other nearby merchants closed in mid-December as lava from Kilauea volcano appeared to be heading their way.

The lava came within a few hundred yards of the store but stalled.

Scientists say lava continues to break out of the flow, but closer to the volcano’s Puu Oo vent and not near the town.

Supermarket spokeswoman Sheryl Toda says the store will look brand new due to renovations.

Pahoa’s only other supermarket is an organic food store that some residents said was too expensive for groceries.
