Brian Mundell’s three-run homer ignited a five-run rally by Cal Poly, which went on to defeat Hawaii 7-5 on Friday evening in the first of a three-game series at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Ryan Drobny added a two-run double and Mundell finished with four RBIs for the Mustangs (12-18, 2-2 Big West), who handed Hawaii (12-21, 3-4) its ninth loss in 11 games away from home this season.

UH took a 5-0 lead off Cal Poly starter Casey Bloomquist, who gave up a career-high 11 hits in five innings.

Mundell went deep in the bottom of the fifth off Hawaii starter L.J. Brewster, who gave up his first homer of the season.

The Mustangs tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning after Brewster and reliever Matt Valencia walked the first two batters. Drobny’s hit tied the game and Peter Van Gansen singled home the go-ahead run. 

Brewster allowed four runs on five hits in five innings with five walks and three strikeouts. Valencia (0-2) recorded only one out and gave up three runs on two hits and two walks to take the loss.

All nine starters had at least one hit for UH. Marcus Doi, Alex Sawelson and Chayce Ka’aua each had two hits. All 12 of Hawaii’s hits were singles. 

Taylor Chris (1-0) and Danny Zandona combined to hold UH to one hit over the final four innings. Zandonda worked the final two innings and struck out five to pick up his fifth save.

The series continues Saturday at 3 p.m. Hawaii time.
