Haleakala officials nab two men for paragliding activities at crater
Federal charges are pending against two 19-year-old men who were allegedly involved in illegal paragliding activities inside Haleakala Crater.
The two were apprehended Tuesday, according to a news release issued by Haleakala National Park.
One man was caught after launching and landing in a critical endangered species habitat. The other was nabbed after an unsuccessful attempt to launch.
Authorities seized and impounded their equipment.
Federal regulations protecting critical natural and cultural resources prohibit powered and non-powered flight into the crater on Maui without a permit.
