Cool nights hang on, with vog on horizon
Light winds are letting temperatures rise into the 80s in some places during the day, but nights are still cool and vog is likely to move over the western islands Tuesday, National Weather Service forecasters said.
A front moving toward Hawaii from the northeast has weakened the cold north wind. The weak front is expected to move over the islands Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing an increase in windward and mauka showers as tradewinds also return, the weather service said.
Until the front brings some moisture, dry air over the state will allow temperatures to drop into the 50s to mid-60s at night through Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday, according to the NWS.
The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for south to southwest wind developing in the afternoon and evening, becoming light with low temperatures of 58 to 67 degrees, the NWS said. Tuesday will be mostly sunny but hazy as vog drifts over Oahu. The vog will remain over Oahu until Wednesday night, when the front arrives after midnight.
Park vandalism leads to call for public’s help
The Kauai County Department of Parks and Recreation is asking the public to help stop vandalism at the comfort station next to the skate park in Kapaa and other county facilities.
Since the start of the year, the comfort station at the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapaa has been vandalized several times a week.
On Friday, in the most recent incident, an individual or individuals destroyed a toilet in the women’s restroom and a urinal in the men’s restroom. Two sinks on the building’s exterior were also damaged, according to a county news release.
The interior walls also have been defaced with graffiti.
Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo estimated repair costs for the restroom at $1,500 per month since January.
"We are all impacted by the vandalism," said Rapozo in the news release. "The replacement costs and manpower requirements are borne by the taxpayers. In addition, the time spent on repairs means time taken away from other parks."
Anyone who observes suspicious activity at the Kapaa restroom or other facilities is urged to call police dispatch at 241-1711.
Hydrant work will cut some water service
The Kauai Department of Water will shut down water service for customers in Anahola from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to allow a contractor to hook up a new fire hydrant.
The affected area is on Aliomanu and Kukuna roads and Kikoo and Puu Hale loops.
