Florence, Zietz move on in Billabong Pro
Two Hawaii surfers finished second in their first-round heats to advance in the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Monday.
John John Florence and Sebastian Zietz came up short of winning their heats in the 10- to 15-foot waves, which would have advanced them straight into the third round. Florence scored 15.83 points, which would have been good enough to win half of the heats, but fell to Kai Otton’s 18.24. Zietz scored 10.34 but lost to Kelly Slater, who tallied 16.40.
Freddy Patacchia was third in his heat, failing to advance when he finished behind Kolohe Andre of Brazil and Julian Wilson of Australia.
Florence takes on Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro and Zietz faces Alejo Muniz, also of Brazil, in Tuesday’s action.
