Rainbow Wahine headed to St. Mary’s for WNIT
The Rainbow Wahine basketball team was hoping to cap an exciting season by hosting a postseason game, but its hopes were dashed by the WNIT committee Monday when it was assigned to play Friday at St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif.
After losing to Cal State Northridge in the Big West title game, Hawaii (23-8) was an automatic selection to the WNIT because it won the conference regular-season championship. The Gaels (20-10) tied for third in the West Coast Conference.
Only one other Big West team was selected to the WNIT — fourth-place Long Beach State (22-9), which plays at WCC runner-up San Diego (24-6) on Thursday.
Should the Wahine beat the Gaels, they would face the winner of a game between Fresno State (22-9) and San Francisco (19-13).
