8 rescued after boat sinks in Kaiwi Channel
Eight people were rescued by the Coast Guard Sunday afternoon after a 21-foot recreational boat sank in the Kaiwi Channel, about 12 miles west of Molokai.
All eight people — four children and four adults — were wearing their lifejackets, and no injuries were reported, the Coast Guard said.
The group hung to three kayaks it tied together after their vessel sank.
A helicopter crew from Barbers Point made three trips to the site, transporting victims to Sandy Beach Park, where Honolulu Fire Department crews assisted with the emergency response.
Lt. Jessica Mickelson, a command duty officer, said the rescued group included experienced watermen who had safety equipment onboard that immediately alerted the Coast Guard.
