Hoopili project rezoning request submitted to the city

3 million square feet of commercial space

Developers of the Hoopili master-planned community in West Oahu have filed a rezoning request for the project with the city Department of Planning and Permitting.

The project calls for up to 11,750 homes on 1,554 acres of agricultural land sandwiched between Kapolei, Ewa, Waipahu Kunia and Makakilo. The Hoopili master plan also calls for 3 million square feet of commercial space, five schools and 159 acres of commercial farms.

Hoopili is opposed by environmental interests such as the Sierra Club Hawaii chapter who object to the loss of prime agricultural lands. Area residents, meanwhile, have also raised concerns about its impact on traffic along the busy H-1 corridor.

The project will first go to the city Planning Commission, which will issue a recommendation to the Honolulu City Council, which will have the final say on the rezoning application.

The state Land Use Commission approved the project, 8-1, June 2012.
