Maui County police nab 19 allegedly intoxicated drivers
Maui County police arrested 19 allegedly intoxicated motorists over the weekend, as part of a national campaign to keep drunken drivers off the road.
Seven out of the 19 motorists were arrested were at intoxication check-point roadblocks.
Of the total, 12 people were arrested in central Maui, two in Lahaina, three in Kihei, and two on Molokai.
The Maui Get Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign began Aug. 14 and runs through Sept. 1.
Police said there have been 15 traffic fatalities in Maui County so far this year, seven of which have been attributed to impaired driving. In addition, two out of four near-fatal crashes were alcohol-related and police are awaiting toxicology results for three other fatal crashes in which they believe alcohol is a factor.
