Aiea held off Kailua 25-14 for its first victory of the season on Saturday at the Surfriders’ newly dedicated Alex Kane Stadium.
Na Alii’s win kept Kailua (0-3, 0-3 OIA Blue) winless in a game full of punts, turnovers, penalties and other mistakes by both teams.
"Kailua is a tough team and they’re going to break through and get a win," Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "We were hoping it wasn’t against us. We weren’t really able to capitalize enough on their mistakes."
The Surfriders took an early 7-0 lead when Martin Tigilau connected with Koolau Gaspar for a 37-yard score.
Aiea (1-1, 1-1) pretty much kept the Kailua offense in check after that.
"The effort was there," said the Surfriders’ Joseph Wong, who is still hungry for his first win as a head coach. "But the execution is not there. We can’t be starting drives first-and-20 or first-and-15 and expect to do much with that."
Na Alii fought back for a 7-7 tie, going on a 65-yard drive after a bad Kailua punt snap. Kobe Kato, one of two Aiea quarterbacks who played, hit Austin Hartbarger for an 11-yard score.
Early in the second quarter, Ariq Vergado-Duclayan’s interception led to a 13-7 Aiea lead, when the other quarterback, Jordan Liilii, threw a fade pass for a 6-yard TD to Derreyl Ogawa-Staples.
Another bad Surfriders punt snap after the ensuing kickoff led to another Aiea touchdown and a 19-7 edge. Kailua punter Toa Uta recovered the snap in the end zone, but he dropped it and Na Alii’s Cory Walton recovered for the score.
In similar fashion, Kailua answered with 5:43 to go when Liilii was hit in the end zone and coughed up the ball. Peter Albinio recovered for a touchdown to cut the gap to 19-14, well within striking distance.
Two huge personal foul penalties on Kailua helped Aiea to its next score to virtually put the game away. A 22-yard Liiliii pass to Ogawa-Staples set up Kody Ongory-Mathias’ 1-yard TD plunge.
"I liked the way we hung in there," Say said. "And the kids will learn that they have to play as a team and not as individuals to win."
The Surfriders threatened with a 38-yard run by Dwight Richardson, but he fumbled on a hit from Gabe Igafo and Na Alii’s Bradley Padama-Kinere pounced on it.
Aiea closed it out with its running game along with Ian Fonsca’s interception.
