After a semifinal win, Dennis Lajola said playing in the Creative Energy/Blue Moon Men’s Night Doubles final always "feels new."
Winning the championship, of course, never gets old.
Lajola and Ikaika Jobe joined the list of three-time champions in Kailua Racquet Club’s signature event with a 6-1, 6-3 win over two-time winners Mikael Maatta and Jan Axel Tribler on Saturday night.
Overall, Jobe and Lajola both claimed their fourth titles in the event. Jobe won his first a decade ago with Bradley Lum-Tucker. Lajola repeated with a victory in the final after winning with Michael Yani last year.
"Each one is special in its own way," said Lajola, who won with Jobe in 2009 and 2010. "Obviously the first time you win is a different feeling, but winning a fourth, with Ikaika, is great."
The tournament record of six titles, set by Kendall Char in the early 1980s and matched by Ryan Ideta in 2000, is still a bit in the distance, but Lajola (25) and Jobe (31) figure to have time to make a run at the mark.
"We’re still young and have many more good years of tennis ahead of us," Lajola said. "But there’s always great competition, so nothing’s ever given. We definitely earned this title this year."
Maatta and Tribler also have been regulars in the final over the last decade, winning in 2011 and ’12. They returned with a dramatic semifinal win on Friday, extending the duel with Wei Yu Su and Minh Le with a service break down 6-5 in the third set before winning the tiebreaker.
Jobe and Lajola jumped on them early on Saturday, opening the match with a service break on their way to a 5-0 lead in the first set.
"I think we kind of surprised ourselves," Jobe said. "Sometimes that’s how it goes in doubles — it’s all about the momentum."
Maatta and Tribler opened the second set by breaking Jobe’s serve, but Lajola and Jobe answered to tie at 2-2 and got another break to go up 5-3. Jobe then held serve to secure the win and the $3,000 first prize.
"They played really well, but we were flat and couldn’t get the energy going," Tribler said. "We really tried the second set to pump ourselves up, but they played too well."
"Today Dennis didn’t miss one return and that makes it tough," Maatta said.
The win also gave Jobe and Lajola bookend wins in the Triple Crown of Tennis series. They won the opening event, the Oahu Club Men’s Night Doubles, in June, and the KRC win pushed them to the top of the final standings, a distinction that comes with a $500 bonus and a wild-card entry into the doubles main draw in the Royal Lahaina Challenger in January.
Su and Le claimed third place with a 9-7 pro-set win over Hendrik Bode and Pierre Tafelski.
