SandBows lose 3 quarterfinal matches
The top-ranked Hawaii sand volleyball team had three pairs eliminated in Sunday’s quarterfinals of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge in Chula Vista, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine’s No. 1 Brittany Tiegs-Nikki Taylor, No. 2 Olivia Urban-Katie Spieler and No. 3 Hannah Rooks-Sammie Brown won their respective Round of 8 matches. Tiegs-Taylor defeated Pepperdine’s No. 4 pair of Sophie Asprey-Taylor Racich 18-21, 21-15, 15-12; Urban-Spieler eliminated Pepperdine’s No 5 pair of Katie Messing-Corinne Quiggle, 21-18, 15-21, 16-14, and Rooks-Brown beat Grand Canyon’s No. 2 Molly Turner-Emilee Erichsen 21-14, 15-21, 15-7.
Tiegs-Taylor dropped its quarterfinal to Pepperdine No. 2 Lara Dykstra-Becca Strehlow 21-15, 25-19; Urban-Spieler was eliminated by Grand Canyon’s No 1 Mackenzie Phelps-Shannon Dugan, 21-19, 28-26; and Rooks-Brown beaten by Pepperdine No. 1 Kelley Larsen-Kellie Woolever.
The SandBows’ fourth pair to advance to Sunday’s bracket play, No. 4 Lara Schreiber-Mikayla Tucker, won its opening match, then forfeited a Round of 8 match to Phelps-Dugan. Larsen-Woolever went on to successfully defend its Challenge title by defeating Waves teammates Dykstra-Strehlow, 21-14, 21-18.
Hawaii (4-0) returns home to host No. 3 USC on Wednesday, the inaugural match at the new T.C. Ching Complex campus courts. First serve is at 5 p.m.
