Man charged with assaulting police officer near airport
A 60-year-old man was charged Saturday with assaulting a police officer who approached him about an open campfire near Honolulu Airport.
The man, who was booked under the name John Doe, was charged with first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer. His bail was set at $20,000.
Police said the man became angry and struck the officer with a dangerous instrument at about 1 a.m. Friday.
He was arrested on suspicion of assault and fourth-degree arson near the intersection of Rodgers Boulevard and Nimitz Highway.
Police said the arson charge was dropped.
