Brush fire burns 100 acres of sugar cane on Maui
An out-of-control fire burned 100 acres of sugar cane Wednesday near Pukalani in Upcountry Maui.
Workers at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. have been called in to build fire breaks.
Maui County Fire spokesman Edward Taomoto, interviewed Wednesday night, said the fire reported at 6:15 p.m. was not threatening any homes but windy conditions were making firefighting difficult for HC&S.
Taomoto said HC&S did not authorize the cane burning and someone or something started the fire below Ikea Place in Pukalani.
He said Maui County firefighters were monitoring the situation.
