Austin Pope is looking for a little more stability.
Pope, a 6-foot-6 point guard at North Idaho College, announced Tuesday he has decommitted from Hawaii and coach Benjy Taylor, even as UH nears a decision on its long-term coaching future.
Pope said when he gave Taylor his oral commitment on March 25, he was under the impression that Taylor would likely be the coach.
Taylor is still officially in the running — at least a half-dozen candidates, including Taylor, have been interviewed by incoming athletic director David Matlin, and a decision could come by the end of the week. But Pope began to have his doubts and has decided to see what else is out there.
Pope tweeted out this message: "I have decided to de commit from Hawaii due to circumstances beyond my control. I thank them for the offer but I would like to explore my other opportunities. Thanks!"
He gave the same quote to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Pope said he has spoken with Taylor and that they were on good terms.
Taylor is not allowed to talk publicly about recruits until they are signed, per NCAA rules. Taylor has declined comment about the coaching search process.
Pope represented one of a handful of scholarships UH has to offer for next season. The signing period begins April 15, which could be close to when UH has its long-term coach in place.
Pope averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 16 games in the 2014-15 season, shooting 46.5 percent from the field, 31.4 percent on 3-pointers and 60.9 percent at the free-throw line.
The sophomore said he has no frontrunners for his services now but has been contacted by "a lot of different schools."
UH is still on his watch list, he said, pending the outcome of the coaching hire. Pope knows a handful of the Rainbow Warriors with eligibility remaining.
