City identifies pedestrian killed by reversing vehicle
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified a 70-year-old man killed when he was hit by a vehicle backing out of a private road Tuesday.
The medical examiner said Dexter Mateo died of blunt force injuries to his head and body. The death was classified as accidental.
A 49-year-old female driver backing a vehicle out of a private road in the 600 block of North Vineyard Boulevard hit Mateo at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. An ambulance took him in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.
Police said Mateo lived near the accident scene.
Because the accident took place on private property, the death is not included as part of the official Oahu traffic fatality list, police said.
There have been 39 traffic deaths on Oahu roads so far this year, compared with 38 by the same time last year.
