Duke’s OceanFest opens Saturday
The 13th Duke’s OceanFest, a nine-day event honoring the late Duke Kahanamoku and his sports legacy, opens Saturday in Waikiki.
Twenty-three competitions will be held through Aug. 24, which is the 124th anniversary of the birth of Kahanamoku, Hawaii’s first Olympian and considered the father of modern surfing.
Saturday’s events include surfing, paddle boarding, sand volleyball and the Wounded Warriors Canoe Regatta. The opening ceremony is set for 5 p.m. in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Kuhio Beach.
Manoa reaches 10U Ripken semifinals
Manoa advanced to the semifinals of the 10U Cal Ripken World Series on Thursday by defeating tournament host Winchester (Va.) 17-5.
Manoa will seek redemption Friday against Lexington (Ky.), which edged the Hawaii team 4-3 in pool play. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 a.m.
Earlier Thursday, Manoa shut out Cranston (R.I.) 5-0.
