UH diving team sweeps at MPSF
Aimee Harrison and Amund Gismervik clinched the 1-meter diving titles for the University of Hawaii swimming and diving teams at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in Pasadena, Calif., on Wednesday.
Harrison, a junior, won her second consecutive title with a score of 291.10, followed by junior Lauren Hall (266.05). Freshman Monica Gavaris scored 263.80 to place third in her debut.
Gismervik won his first MPSF title by nearly a 14-point margin (367.25).
The Rainbow Wahine won and set new program records in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40:24, and the 800 freestyle relay at 7:14.88. On the men’s side, the Rainbow Warriors took gold in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.11, and silver in the 800 freestyle relay.
The MPSF Championships continue Thursday with four swimming events and the 3-meter Diving Championships.
Lenny wins Sunset Beach Pro
Kai Lenny beat Brazil’s Caio Vaz by 2.21 points to clinch his fourth Sunset Beach Pro of the Stand Up World Tour on Wednesday. Lenny scored a 15.27 to edge Vaz, Hawaii’s Mo Freitas and Australia’s Justin Holland in the finals.
The 22-year-old scored a 7.5 and 7.77 on his final two waves of the heat to clinch the first event of the 2015 season.
Hawaii tied for sixth at John Burns
Justin Chu shot a 1-under 71 to put the University of Hawaii men’s golf team in sixth place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course in Lihue on Wednesday.
The Rainbow Warriors are tied with Colorado State, while California holds the lead with a score of 282.
California’s Shotaro Ban leads the field (67), trailed by George Cunningham of Arizona (68), and UNLV’s John Oda (69). The second round of the tournament continues Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
Vulcans sweep San Francisco State
The Hawaii Hilo women’s softball team thumped San Francisco State 10-2 and 7-0 in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday in San Francisco.
Melanie Morales kickstarted the Vulcan offense with a homer in the first inning to build a 3-0 lead. The Gators responded with two runs in the third, but UHH (8-6) piled it on with Shelby Vickers’ home run and doubles from Vickers, Brittany Huff, and Brandi Wilson. Vanessa Salinas earned the win on the mound, while Aryn Guzman picked up the loss for SFSU (1-7).
In the nightcap, UHH’s Danielle Wilson pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits with no walks. SFSU’s Sara Higa led all hitters going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Emily Greene and Vickers led the Vulcans’ offense with two hits each.
The doubleheader closed out UHH’s 14-game road trip in California. The Vulcans’ next game is against BYU-Hawaii on Feb. 28 at noon.
